Privacy Policy
Career Engineer is a Chrome extension that fills in job application forms and, if you ask it to, writes a resume or cover letter tailored to a posting. This policy explains exactly what it does with your information. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than in the usual defensive legalese.
1. Who we are
Career Engineer is operated by the individual developer of the extension. For any privacy question, correction, or deletion request, email support@careerengineer.app. If you tell us you are exercising a legal right over your data, we will treat it as such.
2. What we collect, and where it lives
| Information | Where it is stored | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your profile — name, contact details, address, work and education history, links, work-authorisation answers, and any demographic answers you choose to enter | On your device, in Chrome's extension storage. Not on our servers. | So forms can be filled without you retyping it |
| Documents you upload or generate — resumes and cover letters | On your device, in Chrome's extension storage | So they can be attached to applications |
| Account email (paid plans only) | Our server | To identify your subscription and apply your usage allowance |
| Usage counts — how many autofills and generations you have used | Our server | To enforce plan limits. Counts only, never the content |
| Payment details | Never with us. Handled by Paddle, our payment provider and merchant of record | We never see or store your card number |
Demographic and work-authorisation answers
Some applications ask about veteran status, disability, race, or gender. If you choose to save those answers, they are stored on your device like the rest of your profile and used only to fill the matching field on a form. We never infer them, never guess at them, and never transmit them. Leave them blank and the extension will leave those fields for you to answer by hand.
3. Pages you visit
For the extension to recognise an application form, its code has to be able to load on web pages. That means Chrome will tell you it can "read and change data on all websites" — that permission is what makes form detection possible at all.
What it actually does with that access:
- It reads a page's form fields when you click Autofill, in order to match them to your profile.
- It reads the job posting's title, company, and description so a generated document can be tailored to it.
- It does not log your browsing history, monitor pages in the background, or send page contents anywhere — except the job posting text, and only when you ask for a document to be generated.
- It never submits an application. It stops at the review step so a person always presses the final button.
4. The one time your data leaves your device
When you ask Career Engineer to write a resume, a cover letter, or an answer to an open-ended application question, generating that text requires a large language model, which cannot run inside the extension. In that case, and only in that case:
- The relevant parts of your profile and the job posting are sent to our server over an encrypted connection.
- Our server passes them to Anthropic, which generates the text and returns it.
- The result comes back to your browser and is stored on your device.
We do not retain the content of these requests after the response is returned; we keep only the usage counts needed to apply your plan limits. Anthropic processes the request as our service provider, under its own commercial terms, and does not use it to train its models.
If you bring your own API key, the request goes from our server to your own provider account under your own terms instead.
5. What we never do
- We do not sell your personal information, or share it for advertising.
- We do not use your data to train AI models.
- We run no analytics, telemetry, advertising pixels, or third-party tracking scripts in the extension.
- We do not read your email or send messages on your behalf. If you use outreach features, you copy the text and send it yourself from your own account.
6. Service providers
We keep this list short on purpose, and it is complete:
- Anthropic — generates document and answer text, as described in section 4.
- Paddle — processes payments as merchant of record and holds your billing details.
- Our hosting provider — runs the server that handles accounts, usage limits, and the generation requests above.
7. How long we keep things
- On your device: until you delete it. Clearing the extension's data or uninstalling it removes your profile and documents from your computer.
- Account email and usage counts: while your account exists, and for a short period afterwards for accounting and tax records.
- Generation request contents: not retained after the response is returned.
8. Your rights
You can see and edit everything in your profile at any time from the extension's options page, and delete it there or by uninstalling. For anything held on our server, you can ask us to access, correct, export, or delete it by emailing support@careerengineer.app.
Depending on where you live — including the EEA, the UK, and several US states — you may have additional rights over your personal data, such as objecting to processing or lodging a complaint with a regulator. We honour these requests regardless of where you live, and we will not charge you or degrade your service for making one.
9. Children
Career Engineer is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and move the date at the top. If a change is significant — for example, a new category of data leaving your device — we will tell you in the extension before it takes effect, rather than relying on you to re-read this page.
